Baby fingerprinting can be a fun activity for you and your baby, or it can be a stressful one.
Many parents want their baby's fingerprints for various reasons. Some just want them so they can
put them in a frame and place them on the wall. Some parents have a baby book with a section for
fingerprints. Another reason could be for a security measure, always having your baby's
fingerprints incase your baby gets kidnapped. There are some products on the market that will
help you fingerprint your baby. Many child ID kits come with a fingerprinting section along with
directions on how to obtain your baby's fingerprints. You can also get your baby's handprints and
footprints. Your child's birth certificate will usually have their footprints as well.
If you have bought a home printing kit, such as the kind that uses clay, then here are some good
ideas with going about the procedure. First of all, make sure that the baby's fingers are clean.
Wash them with soap and warm water and be sure to rinse all of the soap away. Next, you will want
to put your baby in a comfortable position such as in a high chair. The best time to do this is
generally when the baby is asleep. But if the baby is awake, the high chair is generally a good
place to start. If they baby is asleep then you can get the print easier and the baby is less likely
to move. Any small movement from the baby can ruin the print. If you have the clay kit then first
you will follow the directions which usually want you to wet the clay and wait a small amount of
time and then press your baby's fingers, hands, or feet, whichever you are doing, into the clay and
hold it there. If your baby wakes up, or is awake during this process, it probably won't like the
feeling of being forced into a position. Have a pacifier or favorite toy handy and be ready to
distract the baby from the pressure you are putting on its body.
When you are finished you will want to make sure that you clean your baby's fingers really well.
Babies love to put their fingers in their mouth so you should use soap and water and rinse thoroughly
once again. If you used ink you should make sure there are no traces of the ink left on the finger
because if your baby eats ink it can become very sick and even poisoned. Having these little prints
somewhere is a good idea not only for your own enjoyment or decoration, but also for a security measure.
Many parents not only enjoy but feel satisfied after they have finished their baby fingerprinting.
