Baby health care is the most important and beneficial aspect of your baby's life. Providing the
proper health care will help your baby live a healthy and happy life. Medical insurance plays an
important role in baby health care. If you are employed then your employer should have some type
of insurance plan that you can get to cover your baby. If you are unemployed or you are employed
but still live in a low income household, you can apply for Medicaid.
Besides having a good insurance plan for your baby, there are other ways to be sure your baby is
getting proper adequate health care. Babies should receive their shots and immunizations at various
times in their life. At your first doctor's visit after you deliver your baby will receive his
first set of shots. At 3 months, 6 months, and at 12 months your baby will receive more immunization
shots. By the time your baby is 2 years old, you should take him to the doctor every year for a
yearly check-up. At most, if not all, of your child's doctor visits your child will be weighed and
measured. If there is a financial reason that you cannot take your child to a doctor, you can
receive services and immunizations at your local health department.
Baby health care also plays a role at home. Your baby should have a scheduled diet, nap times, and
bath times. Baby's that are on a schedule are generally more relaxed and happier babies. Your baby's
diet should provide plenty of vitamins and minerals to help assist him as he grows. Your baby will
start out taking two naps a day, but as your baby reaches 1 year old one of these naps may drop and
your baby will start napping just once a day. A baby should also receive "tummy time" starting around
the age of 3 months old. During this time the baby can lay on the floor on a blanket and it gives the
baby a chance to move around and get some type of exercise. You should give your baby plenty of baths
throughout the week. If your baby has eczema then you can give him a bath every other day to lessen
the chance of his skin becoming dry.
Having proper medicines and tools available in the home is also a good practice to start. Before
bringing the baby home make sure you have plenty of the following: baby pain reliever, gas drops,
a thermometer, baby q-tips, cotton balls, alcohol, diaper rash ointment, A & D ointment, a first
aid kit, baby nail clippers, bandages, a nasal aspirator, and plenty of wash cloths. Having these
items available will help you provide wonderful baby health care.
