Early signs of pregnancy can vary from woman to woman. Every woman is different. Some women
don't have the same symptoms as other women do. So when your friend asks you if your breasts
are feeling tender, or if you are craving watermelon, that does not mean you will definitely
get those symptoms. Here we will go over some different early signs of pregnancy, what you
can expect and what is normal.
Missed Period: One of the first things you will notice is that you have missed your period.
This is the most common sign of pregnancy. Once you become pregnant you will miss your next
expected period and the rest of your expected periods throughout your pregnancy. Your period
will not come back until after your baby is born. It is a good idea to keep a record of your
periods on a calendar, so you know when you have missed one. Other reasons for a missed period
could be excessive weight gain, hormone problems, starting or stopping the use of certain birth
controls, or stress.
Implantation Bleeding: Some women mistake this for a light period, or women that know they are
pregnant already will mistake this for a possible sign of miscarriage. With implantation bleeding
you may experience "spotting". A very small amount of blood will secrete out of the vagina. This
sign also goes unnoticed to many pregnant women.
Tender Breasts: This can happen as early as 1 - 2 weeks after conception. Your breasts will feel
some pain if they are moved around too much or touched. This is because your breasts are getting
their selves ready to be filled with breast milk. PMS, hormone problems, and birth control can
also cause your breasts to be tender.
Fatigue: This can also start as early as 1 week after conception. You will feel more tired than
usual and having the need to take more naps. Some women have reported being so tired that they
will fall asleep at work, at the movies, or doing normal tasks such as talking on the phone or
taking a bath.
Nausea: The most talked about early sign of pregnancy is nausea. Some women feel the need to
vomit, while others actually do vomit. However, some women go through their entire pregnancy
without feeling nausea. Others can go through their whole pregnancy feeling this way all the
time. It varies from woman to woman, as do all early signs of pregnancy.
Backache: A mild dull lower backache is normal throughout your pregnancy. Again, some women
feel this way all the time while others may never feel this way until before delivering the
baby.
Frequent Urination: Most women who are pregnant have the need to urinate more frequently.
Urinary tract infection and diabetes can also cause this symptom.
Darkening of Areolas: The skin on your areola may darken.
Food Cravings: Many women never experience food cravings. Some women experience cravings such
as pickles, ice cream, watermelon, etc. The cravings can be bizarre such as pickles dipped in
maple syrup, popcorn sandwiches, etc. There have even been reports of women craving soap or dirt.
If these really bizarre types of cravings occur you should see your doctor immediately because it
is a sign that your body is not getting a particular nutrient that it needs.
As stated above, some women do not have these symptoms, but most women will have at least one or
two. There are more signs of pregnancy, but these are the most common early signs of pregnancy.
