Unique baby names are baby names that you don't hear very often. Will you choose David or Avery,
Kara or Kieran? In society today many names are becoming more and more unique. Parents often wonder
if they should name their child something unique that would stand out or if they should name them
something more common and easy.
Every year the Social Security Administration updates their list given to newborn babies in our
country the year prior. These statistics are based upon Social Security applications. This report
includes thousands of names for boys and for girls that seem to be the most common names. Unique
baby names would definitely not be on this list. Back in the 1950s a quarter of all Americans
had the top ten names for babies. That rate has dropped greatly, all the way down to barely a
tenth. Back then the most popular names for boys were John, Robert, David, James, and Michael.
The most popular names for girls were Mary, Linda, Debra, Barbara, and Patricia. As you can see,
back then some people may have thought that these names were popular but today we think of these
names as old fashioned. Slowly but surely these days have disappeared from the top 100 baby names
list and one day the names like Emma, Abigail, and Madison will also disappear from the list.
In some countries like Denmark for example, irregular names have to be approved by special authorities.
So basically you can't name your child anything you wish. In America however, a parent can name their
child almost whatever they want to. But will you push these boundaries?
Choosing a popular and common name will assure that your child can go through his or her life without
being picked on or ridiculed. Childhood is very challenging for most children and you don't want your
child being ridiculed because when you were pregnant you went through a list of unique baby names and
discovered one so unique that it sounds absurd to some people. On the other side of things, you may not
want to name your child something common because you don't want your child to have the same name as
other children in class. You may need to find a middle ground somewhere and name your child something
unique while at the same time making sure that it is common enough that they won't be picked on, and
that they will be taken seriously in life. Some people have not been successful or happy with their
name, but most people are still happy when given a unique baby name.
